The XL 105 – So automated we feel sorry for the competition.

Well, not really. Our Heidelberg XL 105 was designed for today’s print environment. Smaller quantities and tighter budgets require automation that simply gets the job done quicker…without sacrifice. Faster make-readies, automated color monitoring and control, blazing run speeds all with an eye on environmental stewardship. So while you’re getting the best technology has to offer, you can also rest easy knowing that you are using less ink, less paper, less waste, and less energy when you choose us as your print partner. Oh, and did I mention that we also use 100% wind power.

Our pressroom forman tells us its best features are (by the way you should skip this section if you’re bored by technical jargon):

Feeder – Single Vacuum Tape feeder with vacuum side guide

Dampening Unit – Varo Dampening, slowing the dampening form roller down by 12%.

Inking Unit – Shorter path from ductor to first form roller and Zero stop oscillation

Printing Unit – Ability to print up to 39pt stock, Ink Temp. cooling system.

Delivery – Venturi Guide plate, aero dynamic grippers, and Heidelberg Drystar 3000

Console – Prinect Print Center with Intellistart software

Color Management – Axis Control with Axis Control reporting tool

Here’s why it matters.

Faster press checks. Less Waste. Consistent Color. Quicker Drying. Better quality. Predictable results.

The vacuum feature on the feeder means less marking opportunities because there are no belts, brushes or wheels getting in the way and no mechanical side guide equals no side guide mark on large solids.

Slowing the dampening form roller down means less hickey concerns because it removes particles off of the plate and circulates them out of the printing process. This equals better quality and a more consistent product.

A shorter path to the plate provides a faster reaction time to ink adjustments. By applying over 85% of the ink on the first form roller we can achieve better solids and have less ghosting concerns.

Zero Stop Oscillation means we’ll save time coming back up to color on press checks and waste less sheets doing it.

Ability to print up to 39pt stock. That’s right up to 39pt, that’s 1mm! Need we say more?

The ink temp cooling means you’ll have a more consistent ink lay on the sheet no matter what time of year.

Venturi guide plate means less marking higher quality work. Aero Dynamic grippers equal less turbulence on the sheet and no slapping on the guide pan. Drystar 3000 means you’ll be able to efficiently dry the sheet at 18,000 iph.

All that great sounding software means our operators are able to set up your next job while the current job is running.

Color consistency throughout the run. We can literally print out a report to prove it.

So, don’t be late for your press check. As efficient as this press is, 10 minutes could have been 3000 sheets of pure automated perfection.

Another digital press. Big Whoop?

Well maybe. Ask yourself this:

Are you tired of seeing your corporate colors look different on every piece you print?

Have you ever wished you could test the market with your new marketing piece before you print the whole project?

Have you ever been late on a project and just needed 50 or so to get you through your meeting while we run the rest?

Have you ever found yourself at the end of the season realizing your predictions were a little short of reality and you just need a few hundred more to get by?

Do you dread or even avoid printing digital because there’s just no way it will be the quality you need?

Have you ever been disappointed that your beautiful photography fell flat on paper?

Have you been charged with reducing your mailing list because of budget cuts?

If you said yes to any of these, our new press might just be a big whoop after all. The HP Indigo 7500 offers an unsurpassed combination of versatility, adaptability and offset quality output. The good news for designers accustomed to designing pieces for conventional presses is that many of the design considerations for this press are exactly the same. In fact, you will find no compromise in quality when printing on the this Indigo. It’s suited for a broad range of applications: marketing collateral, publishing, direct mail and photo specialty printing, as well as label and packaging production.

Click on a topic below to learn more:

Unmatched, consistent, offset quality

Sharp images. Vivid colors. Unbelievable photography.

Spot color matching

Consistent, accurate match for corporate branding and custom color requirements

Versioning, variable and segmenting

More environmentally friendly

Skeptical? Put it to the test. We’re sure you’ll be just as impressed as we are.

Unmatched, consistent, offset quality

HP Indigo digital presses, like conventional presses, use liquid ink to print an image.

HP Indigo digital presses do not limit ink coverage to 200%; coverage can reach beyond 400%, ensuring color depth and saturation.

From the PIP, the ink is transferred to a blanket that transfers the ink as in conventional offset printing. The blanket acts as a shock absorber and pressure pad to ensure even ink transfer to the substrate. This enables the HP Indigo digital press to support a wide range of substrates of varying surface texture and thickness.

The HP Indigo blanket also transfers 100% of the ink to the substrate. The total transfer of ink from the blanket allows the same set of cylinders to be used to print the complete sheet, ensuring precise color-to-color registration and color consistency throughout.

HP Indigo proofs. The HP Indigo digital press supplies proofs very quickly, using Eurostandard inks on your specified final stock. The HP Indigo proof is especially useful for test marketing purposes or for instances where the trimmed and finished product delivers more impact than a collection of flat single-sided proofs.

What makes the HP Indigo digital press unique?

The main digital color press technology is the xerographic (dry toner) process, commonly found in laser printers and color copiers. The toner process is typically characterized by a lack of print quality. Dry toner particles range between 7 to 9 microns in size and struggle to reproduce fine details and acceptable colors. With dry toners it is difficult to match the surface gloss of a substrate, usually giving the image a glossy appearance on a matte paper and an ultra-glossy appearance on a glossy paper. The process also attracts a lot of static that is transferred to the paper and can cause significant problems and waste in the finishing process.

The dry toner process limits your choices and creativity as a designer in terms of print quality, paper quality and finishing techniques. The HP Indigo digital press is the only digital printing technology that can equal or exceed the quality, color range and substrate compatibility of conventional offset printing.

HP ElectroInk advantages

Edge sharpness. Viewed at high magnification, HP ElectroInk clearly forms sharper images compared to xerographic dry toners and even offset lithographic dots (Figure 3 and 4).

Dot gain and color consistency. HP Indigo digital presses can vary the dot gain to allow the consistent, precise control of the exposed dot size and optical density.

Image gloss. Similar to offset inks, HP ElectroInk images match the gloss of the underlying substrate, from rough to dull to high gloss. The HP ElectroInk layer is only about one micron thick and accentuates the media’s characteristics by following the “hills and valleys” of the substrate surface rather than filling them in.

Instant image drying. HP ElectroInk solidifies as soon as it transfers to the substrate, so the finished print emerges dry and can be finished immediately.

Light fastness. The encapsulation of the pigment sub-particles in HP ElectroInk helps prevent oxidization and the effects of relative humidity. The color durability of the printed images, including light fastness, equals and often exceeds conventional offset inks.

The HP Indigo print process needs virtually no make-ready. The next job can be prepared while the current job is being printed, and there is no need for wash-up between jobs. From the very first sheet the print is up to ink weight and in register, which dramatically reduces waste.

Sharp images. Vivid colors. Unbelievable photography.

Light cyan and light magenta inks. When used with CMYK process HP ElectroInks, light cyan and light magenta inks deliver significantly enhanced photo quality, giving photofinishers and print service providers a source of competitive advantage in the professional album and photo specialty markets. The new light inks provide an improved image with smoother tone transition and saturated colors, enhancing the quality of photo-specialty products such as photo books, photo calendars, greeting cards and more.

Spot color matching

For graphic designers, a PANTONE-licensed press means that they can design using industry standard PANTONE Colors and get color output that helps them achieve in output what they conceived in their design.

HP and PANTONE have jointly created a special PANTONE HP Digital Color Toolbox for users who will be designing and printing to a PANTONE-licensed HP Indigo digital press with either CMYK or HP IndiChrome (CMYKOV) ink sets.

Consistent, accurate match for corporate branding and critical color requirements

HP Indigo offers several methods for extending your color gamut—and thus your creative flexibility:

The HP IndiChrome on-press system uses the standard CMYK inks plus additional orange and violet inks By using the standard CMYK ink set in HP IndiChrome on-press, the HP Indigo digital press can quickly switch from standard 4-color work to 6-color printing, even within the same document, without changing inks. In addition to extending the printing gamut, HP IndiChrome on-press lets you match a much wider variety of colors and gives you a broader range of special colors to produce more vivid images.

The HP IndiChrome off-press method creates ink that can be treated as true spot color—it can be printed as a solid, i.e., not screened. This can be especially useful for jobs that contain fine detail, such as linework, logos and fine small point text. It can also be used to improve the appearance of solids that may otherwise be prone to banding. However, the major benefit of HP IndiChrome off-press is that it gives you a precise match to the color you have chosen. It’s also useful for 2-color jobs, such as economical personalized direct marketing pieces.

To summarize, HP IndiChrome is useful for a variety of different reasons. The following is a list of some, but not all, of its possible applications. Using HP IndiChrome off-press:

When special color inks are needed to match corporate colors precisely

For the production of bright colors that cannot be accurately reproduced by the 4-color process

For producing special colors that can be printed as solids (especially useful for small point type)

To enable the economic printing of 2- or 3-color jobs, such as producing direct mail or business cards without extra charges for a third or fourth color Using HP IndiChrome on-press

When you need to produce more vivid life-like images

To print a larger range of special colors more accurately than is possible with the 4-color process

HP ElectroInk dries instantaneously on contact with the substrate. It doesn’t get absorbed to any great extent and thus maintains highly defined, sharp dots— delivering superb results on either non-absorbent or highly absorbent materials. In most cases the printed sheets can be handled and finished immediately.

Versioning, Variable, Segmenting

The HP Indigo digital press can also personalize every single printed sheet, whether it is for an individual, a company or even a sequential number or barcode— everything in the design can be varied, including text, images and illustrations.

HP Indigo digital presses use a light sensitive plate that attracts ink. The Photo Imaging Plate (PIP) is a dynamic light sensitive plate that can be re-imaged with different information on every revolution of the printing cylinder.

The HP Indigo can create an entirely new separation, in a different color, for every rotation of the cylinder. This is called “on-the-fly color switching” and is the technology that enables the HP Indigo digital press to print fully collated, duplexed and individually personalized sheets.

More environmentally friendly

The Indigo 7500 is a little greener than the rest:

Power consumption reduction of 25% per printed page compared to previous presses

Image oil recycling system, enabling a reduction of approx 50% in consumption and waste

Longer lifespan consumables result in the generation of fewer waste materials

Custom Printers has embraced the new specification known as GRACoL. ( General Requirements for Applications in Commercial Offset Lithography ) This essentially employs the use of new process controls that were not available when the SWOP Specifications were established. Spectrophotometry was not yet a reality and plates were still created with film. The advances in technology have allowed the industry to use tighter tolerances when it comes to creating proofs, as well as measuring press sheets. We use ISO compliant inks throughout, as well as Lab values to more closely monitor our press to proof match. Gone are the days when ink density and dot gain are the primary objectives on a press run. These are still useful tools but we now employ gray balance for 3 color gray and black as the primary control for color. The G7 specification is valid across all platforms from Sheetfed, to Web, Digital and Inkjet.

We also offer Monitor calibration at your site so that what you see on your screen at the design stage… represents more accurately what comes off of our presses in the end. We have a Certified G7 Expert on hand to answer any questions you may have regarding this process and how it can help you bring your ideas to reality.
